The rule in one line
Shoulders and knees covered, for everyone. The Duomo is a working church and the dress code applies in every monument of the complex: cathedral,dome, baptistery,crypt and bell tower. No difference between men and women, no exception for heat.

The point that surprises everyone: a scarf over the shoulders — accepted in many Italian churches — is not enough at the Florence Duomo. You need real clothing. It's the top cause of refusals at the door — and with a booked dome slot, a refusal is expensive.
Summer strategy
- If you walk in shorts: pack light trousers or a knee-length skirt to slip on before entering.
- If you walk in a tank top: a light short-sleeved shirt weighs nothing and solves it.
- Shoes: the climb needs grippy soles anyway — flip-flops are banned, and suicidal on 463 steps regardless.
- Morning slot: at 8:15 am it's cool — dressing "for church" costs nothing.
The complex's other rules
- Backpacks and bulky bags: mandatory free storage at Piazza Duomo 38/r before the dome and bell tower.
- ID: dome tickets are name-registered since 1 March 2025.
- Photos: no flash or tripod; forbidden during services.
- Silence: keep voices low in the nave and crypt; staff will remind you.
- Food and drink: no food inside; a small water bottle for the climb is tolerated — and wise.
- Animals: not admitted, guide dogs excepted.
