The slot system in 60 seconds
Access to Brunelleschi's Dome is strictly limited: you pick a date and time at purchase, and that window is the only moment you can enter. The system exists because the route —463 steps through corridors less than a metre wide — simply cannot absorb crowds.
Three practical consequences:
- Slots for busy periods sell out weeks in advance. Book the dome before flights and hotels, not after.
- Arrive at the Porta della Mandorla (north side) 10–15 minutes early — that's the dome entrance, not the façade one.
- Since 1 March 2025 tickets are name-registered: photo ID required.
The options compared
| Option | Price | What's included | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brunelleschi Pass (official) | €35 | Dome with slot + bell tower, baptistery, crypt, museum (3 days) | Early planners who want the lowest price |
| Fast track (Tiqets) | €58 | Dome and cathedral with priority entry, often free cancellation | Anyone facing sold-out official slots or wanting flexibility |
| Guided tour with climb | €74 | Guide (EN/ES), pre-booked entries, the double-shell story explained | People who want to understand what they're looking at |
| The Florence Pass | €92.5 | Duomo + Uffizi + Accademia | Packing the big three into one weekend |
When to book (and when to climb)
The right question isn't "how much" but "how soon". Slots open months ahead and the best ones vanish in this order: spring weekends, summer mornings, Italian holiday bridges. Ground rules:
- High season (April–October): book 2–3 weeks out; for 8:15 am slots, up to a month.
- Low season: a few days is usually enough — but Sundays stay tight (the dome opens at 12:45 pm).
- Best slots: 8:15–9:00 am for cool air and no crowds; late afternoon for golden light on the rooftops.
- Avoid: summer middays — the corridor between the two shells traps heat.
The mistakes that cost people their ticket
- Wrong queue: the long line at the façade is for the free cathedral. You want the Porta della Mandorla, north side.
- Backpack in tow: you'll be sent to the storage at Piazza Duomo 38/r and lose your slot. Travel light.
- Buying the Giotto Pass by mistake: cheaper, but no dome access — the complex's most common purchase error.
- Slot too close to a flight: leave margin; lateness isn't refunded.
- Forgotten ID: tickets are name-registered — no ID can mean no entry.
