The sweep: what you're looking at
Stand at the square's west end and turn clockwise:
- The Baptistery of St. John in front of you: the Romanesque octagon, oldest of everything here, with the Gates of Paradise facing the cathedral.
- The façade of Santa Maria del Fiore: neo-Gothic, 1887, white-green-pink marble — the cathedral behind it is 14th-century.
- Giotto's Bell Tower on the right flank: 414 steps and the best view of the dome.
- Brunelleschi's Dome at the far end, over the apse: climbed from the Porta della Mandorla on the north side.
- The Opera del Duomo Museum behind the apse at no. 9: the originals of everything you've just seen in copy.
- The Loggia del Bigallo at the south-west corner: Gothic, 14th-century, almost always ignored — look at it, it's free.
The visiting order that works
The square rewards early risers: the dome and bell tower start at 8:15 am, the baptistery at 8:30. The cathedral opens at 10:15 — by which time the first three are behind you. The full sequence with times lives on thehours page; the ideal format remains the 3-day pass.

Eating near the square without regret
The five-minute rule: the closer to the cathedral steps, the more you pay and the worse you eat. Skip the places with laminated eight-language menus and doorway hustlers; walk toward the Mercato Centrale or past Via dei Servi and prices turn Florentine again. A trick that works: watch where the centre's shop assistants take their lunch.
