How entry for services works
Access for worship is free and separate from the tourist queue: mass attendees don't line up with visitors. At the cathedral entrance, tell the staff you're attending the service — they'll point you to the dedicated route.
The trade-off is clear and fair: you enter to pray, not to sightsee. During services the nave cannot be toured and photography stops. If your goal is seeing the cathedral, use thefree entry during visiting hours.
Mass times
The Duomo's liturgical calendar shifts with the seasons and solemnities: weekday, vigil, Sunday and special celebrations follow different schedules through the year. That's why we don't publish a table here that would age fast: the current times are on the official siteduomo.firenze.it, in the celebrations section.
A note for travellers: Sunday mass in the cathedral, often with the choir, is an experience no ticket can replicate — Brunelleschi's dome above the altar, used for exactly what it was built for.
Sunday: the day of worship
On Sundays the cathedral is reserved for services and closed to tourist visits. The rest of the complex runs normally:
- Dome: opens at 12:45 pm;
- Bell tower: full hours, 8:15 am–6:45 pm;
- Baptistery and museum: usual hours.
Plan accordingly: Sunday suits the climbs and the museum; the rest of the week suits the nave and the crypt.
Rules for attendees
- Full dress code: shoulders and knees covered — staff watch even more closely at services.
- Silence and phones off, from entry to exit.
- No photos or video during celebrations.
- Arrive a few minutes early: once the service begins, entry may be limited.
- Major feasts: at Easter, Christmas and solemnities attendance is high and the whole complex's hours change — check everything ahead.
